Find a SEO & Digital Marketing Expert →Overview
An SEO and digital marketing expert decides what happened to a company's online visibility and why: whether a ranking drop came from the search engine, the agency, a competitor or the market, and whether paid and organic campaigns were run the way a competent marketer would run them. Search results and ad auctions look opaque, and the expert's job is to tie the outcome to dated evidence. This page covers search and online campaign practice. What an ad told consumers belongs to an advertising and marketing expert, how a website's code worked belongs to an internet and web technology expert, and pricing the loss belongs to a damages expert.
The expert reads analytics exports, search console data, ad platform change histories, rank tracking logs, crawl reports, link profiles, agency contracts, invoices and status reports. Change histories matter most, because they show what was done and when.
The common dispute is an agency or vendor accused of hurting a site, or a claim that a competitor did. A credible analysis separates at least four causes: a change to the search engine's systems, a technical change on the site, a change in demand or season, and a change in what competitors did. The expert lines up traffic by page, query and device against the dated events. A single chart of total traffic proves very little.
Platform rules are the nearest thing the field has to a written standard. Google says sites that violate its spam policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all, and that violations can be handled by automated systems or human review resulting in a manual action 1. It defines link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings, and lists buying or selling links for ranking purposes as an example 1. Those are a private company's policies. They are not law, and they change. They do give an expert something to measure an agency's tactics against on a given date, so the version in force matters.
Agency disputes usually come down to the contract. Promised rankings, promised traffic and vague deliverables each invite a different fight. The expert compares the scope with what was billed and what the logs show was done, then says what competent work would have included. No outside party controls an organic ranking, so a promised position is a warning sign on its own.
Paid search raises trademark and competition questions. In 1-800 Contacts v. FTC, the Second Circuit reviewed agreements in which competitors agreed, among other things, to refrain from bidding on keyword search terms. It held that although trademark settlements are not immune from antitrust scrutiny, the FTC wrongly treated the agreements as inherently suspect and wrongly found a violation under the rule of reason, and it vacated the order 2. Whether bidding on a rival's mark creates confusion is a question for the trademark claim and the forum's test. The marketing expert can explain how auctions work, what the ad copy said and what a click actually shows.
Click fraud and invalid traffic claims rest on logs. The expert looks at IP ranges, conversion patterns and the platform's credit records, and says what the available data can and cannot prove.
Digital marketing also runs into FTC rules. The agency says that non-paid search listings for a native ad should not suggest or imply to consumers that it is something other than an ad 3. Under the endorsement guides, advertisers are subject to liability for misleading statements made through endorsements and for failing to disclose unexpected material connections 4. The FTC's business guidance says fake likes from non-existent people are clearly deceptive, and that both purchaser and seller could face enforcement action 5. The consumer reviews rule at 16 CFR Part 465 reaches fake reviews directly 6. A competitor's false advertising claim runs through the Lanham Act 7, and a marketing expert can show how a tactic was executed, how much traffic it drew and when.
Attribution is the weak point. Platforms report conversions under their own rules, and two dashboards can credit the same sale. An expert should explain the attribution model, test it against actual orders and leave the final pricing to an accountant or economist. Lost rankings are hard to translate into lost profits without a clear baseline.
No license or board exists. Look for someone who has personally run search and paid campaigns at a similar scale in the same sector, with agency or in-house leadership experience. Certifications from ad platforms show product knowledge only. Ask how the expert has separated search engine updates from site changes, and whether the work rests on raw exports or a vendor's dashboard.

FAQ
Look for someone who has personally run search and paid campaigns at similar scale in the same sector. No license exists. Platform certifications show product knowledge only, so ask how the expert separates search engine changes from site changes and competitor activity.
Often, within limits. The expert lines up traffic by page and query against dated events such as a search system update, a site change or a shift in demand. No one outside the search engine can see its systems, so a careful report states what fits the evidence and what cannot be excluded.
Whether that creates liability depends on the facts and the forum's trademark test. In 1-800 Contacts v. FTC, the Second Circuit vacated an FTC order against agreements not to bid on keywords, while saying trademark settlements are not immune from antitrust scrutiny.
They are a private company's rules, not law. They matter because a violation may lower or remove a site from results, and they give an expert a dated written measure for judging what an agency did.
The FTC's consumer reviews rule at 16 CFR Part 465 addresses them directly, and the FTC says fake likes from non-existent people are clearly deceptive. A competitor may also bring a Lanham Act claim, depending on the facts.
In general, SEO and digital marketing expert fees are determined by the expert themselves, based on a variety of criteria. Among those criteria are experience, the volume of data, the platforms involved, the length of the period reviewed and the amount of testimony. Vident does have some influence over expert fees by comparing experts within a specialty, but ultimately it is a personal decision by the expert.
